FlexiCalc: An Editable Calculator App Where Results Update

A normal calculator forgets how it got to the answer. Change the interest rate, the hours or the unit price, and you type the whole thing again. FlexiCalc keeps the working on the page: numbers, labels and formulas stay editable, and results linked to a number you change refresh on their own. This piece covers how that works, what Apple already gives you for free, what FlexiCalc costs, and how it compares.

Cost 86 and Gas Cost 148.2 feeding a Total Cost of 7236.2, with a calculator keypad below and captions reading Drag numbers, Free layout and Real-time Update

TL;DR

Is there a calculator app where changing one number updates every result after it?

Yes. On iPhone, Apple's free Math Notes recalculates when you change a value you assigned to a named variable. FlexiCalc does it without naming anything: continue from a result and the new formula links to it, so editing any earlier number refreshes everything below. It also runs on Android. Pro is $14.99 once, or $7.99 a year.

Is there a calculator app where changing one number updates every result after it?

In short

FlexiCalc keeps every number, operator, label and result on an editable page. Tap a previous result and keep typing, and the new formula links to it. Change the source number later and every downstream result refreshes, while connection lines and a reference checker show what depends on what.

How linking works in a calculator that updates results

You type the way you would on a normal calculator: 100 × 0.46 = 46. Then, instead of copying 46 somewhere, you continue from it. FlexiCalc's docs put it plainly: the new formula will link to the previous result automatically. In the Utility Bills example above, electricity, water, gas and heating each feed a labelled subtotal, and the subtotals feed the total. Change the off-peak unit price from 0.46 to 0.52 and every line that uses it, then the total, would recalculate.

  • Reference checker: select a number to see its upstream sources and downstream uses, so you know what an edit will touch before you make it.

  • Connection lines: optional lines drawn between related numbers and formulas.

  • Result preview: a light preview of the answer appears while you type.

Labels turn a sum into a readable note

Any number can carry a label such as Rent, Tax rate or Peak Cost, and key results can stay highlighted. A page you open next month still says what each figure means, which a tape of bare numbers never does. Display format, decimal places, thousands separators and text size are all adjustable.

Two layouts: a vertical notepad calculator or an open canvas

In short

Vertical Layout stacks formulas top to bottom, like a notepad calculator, so the reading path stays clear for budgets and step-by-step sums. Free Layout turns the page into a canvas where formulas and dividers can be dragged anywhere, with a mini map and pinch to zoom for large pages.

The canvas is what makes side-by-side comparisons work: two loan offers in two columns, or three supplier quotes next to each other, each still linked to its own inputs. You switch layouts in Settings, under General.

Pages, templates and the loan calculator app use case

In short

Each calculation lives on its own page, saved automatically and searchable by page name or number notes. Built-in templates cover mortgages, loans, investments, discounts, cost and profit, and you can save any page as your own template for structures you repeat.

Two iPhones showing FlexiCalc: on the left a Templates sheet with Equal Principal and Interest, Utility Bills, Simple and Compound Interest and Annualized Rate templates; on the right a Pages list with Utility Bills, Equal Principal and Interest Loan and DefaultPage, each with an updated-at timestamp, and Import and Add buttons, with captions reading Cloud sync, Multi-page and Calculation history

That makes it a reasonable loan calculator app that does not hide its working. Open the loan template, enter principal, rate and term, then change the rate and watch the monthly payment and total interest move. The same pattern fits a monthly budget, a client quote with tax and margin, or a stack of discounts and coupons.

Exchange rates, voice input and export

  • Live exchange rates (version 2.0.5, 18 October 2026): multi-currency conversion with trend charts from 24 hours to a year, plus Home Screen widgets.

  • Voice input for numbers and operators, and a scientific keyboard with a short explanation on long-press.

  • Export a page as an image to share, or as a .flexicalc file that someone else can open and keep editing.

What FlexiCalc costs, and what is free

In short

The download is free, and calculating, editing, switching pages and exporting images work without an account. FlexiCalc Pro is sold three ways on the US App Store: $14.99 once for Lifetime, $7.99 a year, or $0.99 a month. The Lifetime option is the one-time purchase.

  • Documented as Pro: Auto Sync and Real-time Sync across devices. The docs do not list any other Pro-only feature, so check the in-app paywall before you pay.

  • Offline: calculation, editing, dragging and page management do not need internet. Sign-in, sync, restoring purchases and exchange rates do.

  • Platforms: iPhone and iPad, Macs with Apple silicon (as the iPad app), and Android through Google Play.

FlexiCalc vs Math Notes, Soulver, Tydlig and a spreadsheet

In short

FlexiCalc's Lifetime unlock is $14.99. It is not the cheapest way to get results that update: Apple's Math Notes is free and Tydlig is $1.99. What it adds is linking without naming variables, a free canvas with pages and templates, and an Android app.

Prices from each app's US App Store listing, soulver.app and FlexiCalc's store listing on 21 October 2026. Not listed means the listing does not mention it.

Apple Math Notes is the first thing to try if you are on iOS 18 or later: assign rent = 1200, use rent in later lines, and changing it updates every result. The catch is that you name each value you want to reuse. This is the calculator with variables on iPhone that most people already have. Soulver is the most capable natural-language notepad, with unit and currency conversion and live line references, at $59 for Mac, iPad and iPhone. Tydlig pioneered the canvas calculator with linked numbers and is $1.99, but it has no pages, templates or Android app. A spreadsheet does all of this with cell references, but it is slow to type into on a phone.

Who FlexiCalc suits, and who should skip it

In short

It suits people who redo the same maths with one number changed: budgets, loan offers, quotes, shopping deals and measurements. Skip it if Math Notes already covers you, if you want natural-language input like Soulver, or if a spreadsheet on a laptop is where this work happens anyway.

  • Budget and bill planners who keep one page per month and adjust a single figure instead of rebuilding the sum.

  • Freelancers and small shops who reuse a quote template with cost, tax and margin lines.

  • Mixed iPhone and Android households, since it is the only calculator in this comparison with apps on both.

Two things to know before you buy

Pick Lifetime at $14.99 if you want to pay once; the $7.99 and $0.99 options renew. Our directory listing currently shows $7.99, which is the annual price; the App Store tiers above are the current ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just use Apple's Math Notes instead of an editable calculator app?

Often, yes. Math Notes is free in the Calculator and Notes apps on iOS 18 or later, and when you change a value assigned to a variable, every result that uses it updates. You have to declare each variable first (for example rent = 1200). FlexiCalc links results without naming anything, adds a canvas, pages and templates, and also runs on Android.

Is there an editable calculator app that also works on Android?

Yes. FlexiCalc is on Google Play as well as on iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs, so the same linked, editable pages work on an Android phone. Apple's Math Notes, Soulver and Tydlig are Apple-only.

Is FlexiCalc a one-time purchase?

It can be. The download is free and you can calculate, edit and export images without an account. On the US App Store, Pro is $14.99 once for Lifetime, or a subscription at $7.99 a year or $0.99 a month. Pick Lifetime if you want to pay once.

Do I need an account to use FlexiCalc?

No. Calculating, editing, switching pages and exporting images work without signing in. You sign in only for sync and account features, and Auto Sync and Real-time Sync are Pro features.

Is FlexiCalc the cheapest editable calculator?

No. Apple's Math Notes is free on iOS 18 and later, and Tydlig costs $1.99 once. FlexiCalc's $14.99 Lifetime buys automatic linking without variables, a free canvas, pages, templates, exchange rates and Android support.

Does FlexiCalc work offline?

Yes for the core work. Calculation, editing, dragging and page management do not need internet. Sign-in, sync, restoring purchases, online templates and live exchange rates do.
